Brother MFC-5440CN Network Inkjet Printer, Scanner, Copier, and Fax Review

(More customer reviews)This is an excellent printer/scanner/fax for the money. I had purchased this as a replacement to an extremely problematic HP 5110.

Install: Installation was extremely easy. Just follow the directions and everything works within about 30 minutes. I really can't stress enough how easy it was to setup this printer. Whether you set it up with a standard USB connection or ethernet/network, the software does everything for you and the software install only takes around 5 minutes.

Software: The software is really simple and easy to use. The downside to this is that it is somewhat too simple. For advanced users that want more options and customizability, they wont find it here. Also, having the preset scan buttons is a little annoying if you like to change your scan options a lot.

I should also note that you can scan/copy things using either your computer or the buttons on the unit. This is very very smooth and allows you do be able to scan things without having to navigate to the ControlCenter on your PC. If you set up the printer on the network it will also even allow you to pick which PC to send the files to.

Printer: Print quality is right on for this price range. This is not a photo printer, but nevertheless printing onto photo quality paper isnt bad. But at the prices you can get digital photos developed at Walmart or Target nowadays, it doesnt really matter.

Scanner: Scan quality is great, scans up to 6000x1200 DPI. Even 300x300 DPI looks great.

Fax: Unfortunately, I cannot comment on this as I have no reason to fax anyone. But if the scan/print quality is any indication, this would work seamlessly as well.

Ink: This printer uses individual C/M/Y/K cartridges. So when one color runs out, you only have to replace that color. The size of the ink cartridges is pretty big, too, so they last longer. The downside to this is that the print head is not replaceable since they are not part of the print cartridges. So you pretty much have to replace the entire printer when it goes out.

Networking: Another GREAT reason to buy this product is that is comes with built-in networking. This is completely unheard of in other brands in this price range and greatly adds to the value of this printer. You can set it up for wireless use or wire it directly to your router/hub. You can also scan images in and send it to any computer on your network ... directly from the printer!

Price: This is in the $ 100-150 price range, which is more or less the low range for AIO printers. In this range, you pretty much have to choose from Lexmark, HP and Brother. Lexmark printers in this range are really cheap and their ink cartridges are overpriced. HP is very problematic, have smaller ink cartridges and are also overpriced. Overall, Brother is the best buy.

Overall: I'm in love. Not only is this the best printer for the money, but this is a GREAT printer/scanner PERIOD. After this experience all my future printers will be Brother brand. I will never buy Lexmark/HP/etc ever again.

I've been involved with PC's since PC's came into existence.Through the years I've owned a wide range of notebooks from luggables, desktop replacements, to travel companions (currently I own a couple of 12" touch screen tablets and two HP 20" HDX media notebooks used as desktop replacements).I was ready for a new travel notebook and started to follow the evolving "Netbook" category.As in the past, I was faced with a substantial expenditure (several thousand dollars) to get one of the current higher end travel notebooks that would meet my general laptop requirements; a light, relatively powerful, good battery life and compact design.The evolving +/- $500 Netbook category piqued my curiosity and I started to read reviews and study the new product offerings including their upgradability potential, or lack thereof.

INTENDED USE:
In my experience, most air travelers use a laptop similar to myself, web browsing, email, and light office applications (word, excel, etc); or in other words the "Netbook" categories target market.

REQUIREMENTS:
On occasion I take long trips across the country (8 to 10 hour block to block) and I wanted my new purchase to provide a single charge that would last through that day's journey; no spare batteries or AC adapter in tow.A typical trip for me begins at the departure gate and firing up the notebook for a little catch-up computing while waiting for departure.Once airborne and settled in, I pull my notebook out for some on-board work.Upon arriving at my connection stop I either head to a travel lounge or the departure gate and get on-line once again.On the last flight leg, I'll generally pull out my notebook for some additional in-air use before getting to my destination.

My target requirements:
1.Light weight & Compact foot-print
2.Long battery life
3.10" - 12" screen size, 1024x600 minimum resolution and bright
4.Reasonable processing power for intended use
5.Windows XP Pro
6.2 GB of memory and a 320 GB 7200 rpm hard drive

MY NETBOOK SELECTION:
I purchased the "Samsung NC10" and I'M VERY IMPRESSED!I pre-ordered from Amazon.com and received the unit on 11/19/08.I settled on the white version since I'm not a fan of black keyboards which the NC10's blue and black color options sport.With the modifications discussed below, this little machine exceeds my overall expectations and is everything the various reviewers have analyzed and discussed to date.Most reviewers consider the keyboard on the NC10 the best in category, but since I'm not a touch typist that wasn't one of my hot buttons, however the key board is large, solid, and pleasant to use.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
The standard NC10 came closest to my purchase specs for light weight; it's under 3 lbs, long battery life; it seems Samsung's targeted 6 - 8 hours of battery life is doable (I've hit 6+ hours using disk, WiFi and toned down screen brightness). The 10.2" screen is very bright and clear with 1024x600 resolutions; it helps to auto-hide the taskbar to buy a little more screen real estate.The unit is very compact and like most Netbooks its projected area is smaller then an 8.5"x11" sheet of paper and the closed clamshell is 1" thick.The standard unit arrives with XP Home, 1 GB memory and a 160 GB 5400 rpm drive.The NC10 feels solid, build quality (inside and out) are excellent and out of the box the unit was responsive and fairly snappy.I have two WiFi access points in my home and the NC10's WiFi card picked both up with excellent reception and through-put; I also tried my Sprint USB broadband adapter with equally satisfactory results.

THE UPGRADES:
Like most engineering types; "If its not broke, take it apart and fix it anyway".I've read the reviews and knew the memory and hard disk could be easily be upgraded (given a little bit of prior experience and some hardware finesse).I went to my preferred parts supplier, Newegg, and purchased a 2GB stick of RAM for $32 and a 7200 rpm 320 GB disk drive for $100.I also picked-up a nice Netbook carrying case by Caselogic for $12 with my Amazon order.I used Apricon's EZ Upgrade Kit to image the units' standard 160 GB disk and then put it on the shelf as the failsafe backup.It took me about 10 minutes to take the unit apart and upgrade the components.I then prepared a Windows XP Pro DVD slipstreamed with SP3, repartitioned the disk, reinstalled the operating system and all the Samsung drivers and application software.Samsung did an excellent job of putting all the NC10's drivers and application software on their technical support web page.The overall result of these upgrades makes a noticeable improvement in overall performance.I'm very pleased with the final results for this tweaked, travel ready road machine (an example: standard boot time to WiFi connection is about 90 seconds, however I use hibernation on my notebooks and the machine will boot-up to WiFi connected status in 25 seconds).

NETBOOKS FUTURE:
I agree with many of the industry and media experts who have editorialized on the Netbook phenomena.Netbooks will continue to be a significant new growth segment in the overall notebook category.The manufactures have an interesting dilemma however; Netbooks will also continue to cut into sales of the higher margin, costlier tier of their notebook offerings.Feature creep is probably going to be the manufactures biggest marketing challenge; the temptation to seek product differentiation by adding larger screens, faster processors (central & graphics), more IO, etc.,all tending to increase price, size, weight, and cut into battery life.If you examine your real world use and expectations you may have the same epiphany I have had; these little Netbooks are excellent solutions vs. the more expensive traditional notebook offerings.With a couple of easy inexpensive tweaks, the "Samsung NC10" is a home run!

Samsung LN40A750 40-Inch 1080p DLNA LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color Review

(More customer reviews)... buy this model.We got it to replace a three year old, 32-inch Sony that has served us very well in our bedroom, but we wanted a bigger screen.We got the bigger screen in a better looking cabinet, and, a much better picture, much better sound, and a much better tuner.

UPDATE (8/24/08) - If I could give this TV more than 5 stars, I would.When I registered my TV with SAMSUNG online (as opposed to mailing in the warranty card), they automatically extended the warranty from 12 to 18 months.Then, 2 days ago, I got a box in the mail from SAMSUNG with their USB wireless network adapter.For free!I attached it and gave myself a crash course in setting up wireless network security. At first I used automatic network setup on the TV menu.It worked well but intermittently with WPA-PSK encryption, but, flawlessly when I used manual wireless setup. The content this gives you is from USA Today.I found out what "That Darn Wheel" on the remote is really for.When you read a multipage news story, you have to use the wheel to turn the pages.There's no other way.

I ordered a cheap HDMI cable from an Amazon independent vendor (cost $6, including shipping) and hooked the TV up to a Philips 160 GB HDD/DVD recorder with a built-in digital QAM tuner.Got rid of all the other cables to neaten up the cable tangle situation.The recorder does 1080P upscaling if you use the HDMI interface and the TV automatically senses and adjusts its resolution mode to match. Makes even regular channels look almost as good as the HIDEF ones.I don't use the recorder's tuner all the time for normal TV viewing, but when I need it, its there to add a new dimension for enjoying this TV's many features.

I got almost $150 back during the 30 day grace period, and the price has fallen another $159 since, but I got it when when I needed it and don't regret not getting a better price. Every time I turn it on, I am glad I chose this model.

Back to my original review -

PLUSES -

CABINET - The jet black bezel has a subtle tinge of red, and is accented with a clear rim.It's stunning.

SOUND- I chose this model for the internal subwoofer.We don't want multiple speakers in our bedroom, and the Samsung's internal speakers work fine.We loaded a Blueman Group DVD and the internal woofer was pretty powerful.I turned up the bass on the built-in equalizer and had to throttle it back to neutral so the room wouldn't shake.The factory settings are fine.

PICTURE - The picture is sharp, even on analog channels.Digital channels look even better.The wideband flourescent backlight delivers the promised color performance.The factory settings make both analog and digital pictures look fantastic, but I detuned the picture to dim down the light emitted into the room and set the energy saving feature to high which also degrades the picture.Know what?It still looks great.

TUNER - We don't have and don't want to use the cable company's box,but, we can get all the analog content and unscrambled digital, high def channels they offer (NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and PBS).The Sony's tuner used to break up on Fox and ABC high def channels, but the Samsung's tuner locks in tight on everything. The Sony took a few seconds to lock on digital channels and the Samsung does this much faster.

MINUSES - Not many.

PRELOADED CONTENT - The content the factory loaded on the internal flash drive seems silly.It includes games, artwork, recipes, and entertaiment.The artwork includes high def works by Monet, Van Gogh, and Latrec.I can see that it might be nice to use the TV as a picture frame, but who needs it.The other content is OK to look at once, but after that, never again.You can't add content to the internal memory, but you can use MP3 and JPEG content on an external USB thumb drive.

THAT DARN WHEEL - Overall, the remote is also great, but the wheel is twitchy and there isn't a single thing you can do with it that you can't do easier by just using it as a 4-way switch (up, down, left, right).It's more awkward to twist the wheel with your thumb than it is to push down on the wheel's edge, but if you aren't careful the slightest twist will change the function you are trying to adjust.It's not hard to master the feel, but the wheel is a totally unnecessary feature.Wonder how much it adds to the remote's production cost.The remote lights up when you touch it, which is great while you are learning where all the buttons are, but it does run the batteries down faster, so the instructions say.You can easily enable and disable the light function.

Amazon's price was right and it dropped $45 between the time I ordered and when it was delivered.Getting a refund for the difference took less than 5 minutes on the phone.The TV was delivered 5 days earlier than promised.

Directions on how to adjust the TV on/off melody sound, which is annoying, are on page 61 of the manual. Navigate to menu/setup/external settings/melody. then select "off."

I tried this mic.This one was equal to the previous mic reception wise. Except that with this mic, it sounded like I was trying to speak with a towel wrapped aroudn the mike.VERY muffled. Side by side with other mics on the same computer, this one was tenfold more muffled then the other 3.It' picks you up fine, just muddled.

Smartparts 8-Inch Wi-Fi Digital Picture Frame Review

(More customer reviews)This review is of the SPX8WF Wi-Fi frame.It currently (12/27/08) has no user guide as that is listed as "coming soon" on the website and is not included in the box.
This frame has a ton of features, and without a guide it is for someone with a lot of patience only.

The Good:
Picture Quality is excellent.
Very nice frame, blends in well with standard picture frames.
Wi-fi setup is easy.
Email works well and resizing of photos happens automatically. Photos are placed into folders according to sender.
Windows Live Frameit Works well, once setup.
The Syncpix software does an OK job of auto resizing to 800x600, but it is not perfect and does make some mistakes.
Frame may be setup to turn on and off on a timer, but there is no motion sensor.

The bad:
The menu system is more complicated than it needs to be, resulting in too many button pushes to do anything.
The software is not included in the box and must be downloaded from the Smartparts website.This would not so bad, except you have to do a bit of digging to find it.The software is a little slow to startup and is very basic.You can either choose single photos or an entire folder to send to the frame.
The Frameit setup is not obvious either, and will result in some hair pulling.To register the frame you must push a small button in the upper left hand corner of the opening screen of the software you just downloaded onto your computer.There is no way to set it up from the frame itself, nor can you do it from inside the Windows Live frame it website.A royal pain, but it does sync up well when done.
Speakers are pretty tinny, but I think all frames have that problem.

Other thoughts:
Considering the price is just over $100, the picture quality and the ability to receive photos wirelessly makes it a good purchase, if you can deal with some frustrations.
Hopefully some firmware updates will address some of the shortcomings of the menu system.
The completion of a good user guide would go a long way towards easing a lot of angry phone calls SmartParts is sure to recieve.I imagine they pushed this product out the door for the holidays before it was truly ready.It has a ton of features, if you can just figure out how to do it.
A steal for those savvy enough to set it up properly.
The slideshow only pulls from one folder at a time.If a card is installed it automatically shifts to the card.While the Syncpix software will re-orient any photos you send to the frame, ones on a card must be done by using the rotate button on the remote.Once you have done that, it will remember the next time it cycles thru.

For the price, you just can't find these features anywhere else.

WoW ! This must be the best MFC out there. I have owned several canon, hp, lexmark MFC, photo printers, fax machines etc. This machine is it. All you need is this MFC & a separate photo printer. you are all set.

3. very compact - very space saving
4. Network ready - other computers on network can use all functions of this.
5. unlimited tech support. not just 1-year like HP/canon.
6. Machine feels sold & feels it will last long

8. installation was breeze

(More customer reviews)I've only had this a week but I've already started using it a lot and have been pleasantly surprised seeing just how far I can push this little rascal!

You can take it anywhere as it's the size of a small book and is very lightweight for a laptop. Traditional notebook laptops are designed to be desktop replacements, so they can end up too big, too heavy, and generally just too *much* for checking your email or editing a Word document in the few minutes you have whilst waiting for the train.

The U100 however, appears to more suitable for moving around frequently and using whenever you get a few moments to spare. It's a great size, any larger than 10" and it would no longer classify as a "netbook" class of laptop, any smaller and the screen would be less practical for serious use. Also, 10" screens have the correct aspect ratio for webpage viewing, you don't get wasted blank space at the sides as I've heard can happen with smaller screens.

It's incredibly portable, surprisingly powerful when overclocked and RAM doubled, good value, nice to type on (80% size keys), and even looks good. It's much more responsive running XP than I had expected, it actually behaves like a desktop PC! Microsoft has clearly removed a lot of their bloatware from XP to give these smaller systems the best chance of running quickly.

It performed well straight out of the box, but I spent a good couple of evenings setting it up *properly.* ie. removing the usual bundled bloatware (came with 3GB of Encarta pre-installed. *shudder*), 30 second trial versions of things you wouldn't use anyway etc.... and now this baby is positively flying along!

So after removing the bloat, installing my own software (Office 2003/2007, MSN, Skype, AVG, Firefox 3, ZoneAlarm, Adobe PDF, heck even Photoshop CS3! Disabled unnessary processes from running in MSCONFIG. After setting everything up just the way nature intended, running PerfectDisk defragmenter and a boot-time defragmentation pass- my U100 was good to go. (well nearly) But there were a couple of things to do first...

On to.... the 1.6GHz Intel Atom PROCESSOR... well, overclocking it to be precise:

It's great as it is out of the box, but you can get it to go 24% faster if you upgrade the BIOS to 1.10B then toggle Turbo mode with Fn + F10 when plugged into the mains. This won't void your warranty as this is an official BIOS update from MSI. Fn + F10 when running on battery *underclocks* it so the processor only runs at 800Mhz and the screen brightness is reduced, prolonging the battery life. I know, it's pretty cool. The light on the power switch shows you which of the 3 power modes is currently in use.

I tested the computer with a freeware utility called "cpuinfo.exe" to see what clock speeds *really* were when it was running at 1) "Eco mode" (green power light) 2) normal power mode (blue power light) and 3) "Turbo mode" (power light goes orange) I found that the CPU of the U100 now happily purrs along at 1984MHz when overclocked -so it's basically increased by exactly 24% as the option states in the BIOS. You can choose between 8%, 16%, or 24%, but from what I've read it's running stable for everyone at 24% (myself included) so you might as well set the overclock to maximum in the BIOS, you can always change it if you need to later.

This 24% increase in speed to just under 2GHz is awesome, especially when all the other Atom processor netbooks use the same processor and can't be overclocked (to the best of my knowledge) so are stuck at 1.6GHz. So the U100 has a clear advantage over its rivals here.

What about the MEMORY?

Comes with 1GB, takes about 20 minutes and only about $40 to double that to its maximum 2GB. You don't void the warranty to do this, and it's dead easy. Take the 9 screws out underneath, pull the bottom half of the case off, just remember there is an on board stick of 1GB DDR2-667MHz RAM, and the expansion slot won't recognise a 2GB module. So you fill the empty slot with 1GB and that's it, memory doubled. I nearly bought a 2GB module by mistake before I read about the onboard memory.

The newer U120 apparently cannot be upgraded from its 1GB of RAM, has the same processor, and has a shorter battery life. You're *much* better off with the U100 if only because you aren't stuck with the 1GB RAM.

What about the HARD DRIVE?

The 160BG hard drive on this tiny 1Kg laptop is very generous- you wouldn't be surprised to get half that capacity on a device such as this. In fact, some versions apparently do ship with an 80BG drive instead. With all my software installed on top of the Windows operating system, I still have 129GB to play with!

The inbuilt card reader works well with my camera's Sony Memory Stick Pro card, and also takes SD cards and probably all the main memory card types.

WIRELESS card:

The built-in wireless card provides outstanding reception and I haven't had any dropped connections since I bought it. It works with all 3 WLAN standards (802.11b/g/n) and naturally works with WEP/WPA wifi encryption.

The 1.3mp WEBCAM is good enough, the SPEAKERS are fine for a small laptop and quite usable, though when I'm at home I plug in my Creative I-Trigue 3300 (my favourite 2.1 system)

Thankfully the TOUCHPAD keys are beneath rather than to the sides of the touchpad which so many other netbooks I've seen have. That's something I would struggle to ever be comfortable with. Although I like the touchpad, I plug in my USB mouse when using it at home as it's easier to use.

PORTS: There are 3 usb ports (two left, one right), VGA port (when connected to my Samsung Syncmaster it can support the large 19" LCD monitor's native 1400 x 900 and looks great!) This is great, bearing in mind the onboard graphics card normally spends its time churning out the U100's 1024 x 600 native resolution instead. It's only when you want to duplicate the video output to an external LCD *as well* as the U100's own screen that it will be forced to display the same 1024 x 600 resolution on the external monitor. This isn't a problem, just an observation. Normally you'd only have one active or the other at any given time.

BLUETOOTH 2.1 is supported. I haven't used it yet but it it's nice to have with all the BT devices around these days.

Very useful row of 8 LEDs shows you Bluetooth, WLAN, sleep, battery, caps, num, scroll lock, and hard drive activity all in the same place.

Criticisms:

Full stop key and comma key are a slightly reduced size, but I'm used to it already. Only took a few days of touch typing to adjust.

Watch out you don't buy the bilingual version in Canada. In London Drugs they sell it with the good old US keyboard, but in Staples they stock a U100 plagued with all sorts of extra keys meant for typing French accents more easily, and most of the keys have everything in French and English, the clutter is annoying. Too bad no one pointed out it's probably no use to anyone outside of Quebec.

It is slightly front heavy due to the battery position, not a problem really, but something to bear in mind when positioning it on your lap for typing.

There's no CD/DVD drive. You don't need one anyway though, just transfer the contents from CDs onto a USB stick in another PC (or over the network) and use them as per usual. Optical drives take up space and use battery power, so not having them is no big loss, even though it seems strange to have a laptop with no CD drive in the 21 Century!

Two other important points:

YOU CAN INSTALL MAC OSX86 (a hacked version of OSX which can run on non-apple hardware. Google for the installer and a how-to guide.) It's a hugely popular mod... so I hear.

You can install Linux on it- this deserves more attention than I just gave it.

(You can have dual boot, or even triple boot systems with Windows, Mac OSX86 and Linux depending on your personal preference and computer literacy)

"Netbooks" are supposed to compromise on power and functionality to increase their portability. Hence they are often thought of as mobile internet access devices incapable of doing anything even moderately groovy...

...but when you have one running at 2GHz, with 2GB of RAM, and 160GB hard drive and all the onboard peripherals you could wish for -it doesn't look like such a compromise after all!

Youtube shows people playing various games on it, so don't think that's not a possibility either!

(More customer reviews)This is my first HDD camcorder. I owned several MiniDV camcorders in the past. I have owned the camera for 2 weeks, so this review should be considered as initial impression.
PROS:
- Picture quality is very good in good daylight. I had some shots at night in well lit family room, and the video is not as sharp as day time shots, but still very good.
- The Super Nightshot feature is fun to have to take kids video while they are sleeping. As expected, the video is very grainy.
- The quality of still pictures is acceptable.
- Zoom is very smooth
- The touch screen is awsome. Hope the screen won't get scratched in the long run
- Camera is easy to use without having to read too much into the manual
- The menu is sort confusing in some areas, but not too bad
- Lightweight

CONS:
- Pricy, compared to MiniDV models of similar quality
- Battery sticks out too much off the back of the camera making it look sort of ugly
- Allows only 3 still shots during video. I wish I can snapshot still photos from video like most of Panasonic models.
- All connectivities are on charging base. This means one more thing to carry with on vacation
- No separate battery charger. Battery is charged on the charging base or on camera
- Only 10x zoom

Overall, pretty happy with the purchase, and will be a lot of funs making family videos. I did not make a single DVD from my previous MiniDV's. This is a 4.5 stars rating.

Back in May of 2009, i purchased my first Samsung Netbook, the N120.I purchased it because of the keyboard size and alleged battery life.I have been happy with it ever since.Battery life is as advertised.

I needed to get a netbook for my wife, and after much shopping, i decided that the Samsung N150 would be a good choice.

Same Keyboard size ratio, great battery life, and some updated features
1. Windows 7 starter edition
2. Pinetrail Processor
3. Same great battery life

Samsung has also made some good improvements with the mousepad.You can scroll, pinch & zoom, and rotate all with the mousepad.

The updated design is similar to the older n120, butnicer.

They moved the power button down to the front which is ok.

one of the USB ports stays powered on to charge your phone or device even during hibernation.

Keyboard is the same spacing and size, but now they are using chiclet style keys.Seems good.My wife may give me more updates on this later.

So far, so good!

I've had some stereos before that feature an iPod interface, but usually it turns out to suck really bad. Like it will default to listing all tracks, rather than by artist or album first. I was very pleased with the way this one works - it leaves all settings on the iPod the same, and gives you the ability to control the music via the iPod directly, instead of using the controls on the head unit. My only complaint is that the display is extremely difficult to see on sunny days. Overall, I would recommend this unit for its price range - I would buy it again.

In case you are new to the Slacker concept, you create your own custom radio stations by selecting artists, and Slacker provides music from those and other similar performers.You can also select from the many Slacker stations.While listening to a station, you can push a "favorite" or "ban" button so that Slacker learns your preferences.

The best part of the Slacker player is the Wi-Fi feature.Before going to bed, I plug in my Slacker Radio to charge along with my other stuff.I hit the connect button, and I'm done.The Slacker radio makes a Wi-Fi connection, and refreshes all the radio stations with new music.Everyday I start out with a newly loaded mp3 player, incrementally better suited to my musical tastes due to the use of the favorite and ban buttons.If you subscribe to the premium service, hitting the favorite button also saves a copy of the song to the player.

Obviously you can "refresh" any mp3 player through the use of playlists, but I never have that kind of time.All my other players are basically static, loaded with the music I first downloaded to them.And unlike downloading music you have selected to an mp3 player, with the Slacker you are exposed to music that you may not know or did not think to download.

For me, with no time or desire to plug my player into a computer and juggle songs in and out, the Slacker is the perfect player.

(More customer reviews)I've owned Garmin's for more than 5 years and I currently own a NUVI 760. I've heard the great news about the TOMTOM 930 with IQROUTES, lane guidance, and the HOME feature so I decided to buy the 930 so I can give it a spin and compare it to the NUVI 760 with MSN DIRECT.

TOMTOM Pluses:
Arrival time -
The arrival time with IQROUTES are MORE accurate than Garmin's. The NUVI keeps updating the arrival time during the trip. I compared the arrival time from the start and the TOMTOM was more accurate. TOMTOM is constantly collecting the travel times and updating their database. When you sign in to the HOME program the IQroutes from your trips are uploaded to the TOMTOM server.

Routes:
If anyone writes a review about a GPS and states that routes are 100% accurate then they are lieing, I have not found the perfect GPS with perfect routes.
The routes on both the 930 and the NUVI 760 have been identical. With the 930 I see minutes left on the trip, time left, and arrival time. I can even tell the 930 what time I would like to arrive at my destination.I can AVOID any of the roads on my trip. You CANNOT avoid roads on the NUVI 760.

TRAFFIC:

I'm using traffic on the 930 through my ATT Tilt phone and it seems to work and it is accurate. It uses my Tilt to access the traffic on the TOMTOM server through the Internet. If you have cell coverage you should have traffic data.
MSN Traffic on the 760 is not accurate and the avoidance feature does not work that well. The bad thing about the MSN Direct feature is that it does not have good range. I live in Chicago and the service does not work in many of the outlying suburbs.

PLUSES:
Iqroutes are more accurate than the NUVI.
Lane guidance works in my area.
Avoiding roads on your trip.
Being able to correct street names, closed streets, one ways, and many other errors is a big plus.
Traffic works well.
The GPS chip has not lost reception. I've lost the signal numerous times on the NUVI.
More information on the 930 screen than on the 760.

TOMTOM minuses:
The screen is hard to see in sunlight.
The maps are not bad since I loaded the Garmin map look on the 930. I even have the magenta route line on my 930.
The battery does not last more than 1 hour.
The Text to speech does not work all the time. The street names are not pronounced as good as the NUVI.
You don't get the constant reminders that the NUVI 760 provides. Sometimes I don't think that I drive the 930 with my eyes close. With the 760 you can close your eyes and not miss a turn.
I cannot locate an address by ANY city like the NUVI. Sometimes the 930 cannot locate an address if it thinks it's in a different city. You have to input the surrounding city names to get the correct address and route.

Archos 7 320 GB Internet Media Tablet Review

(More customer reviews)As an owner of both the new Archos 7 as well as last year's model (the 705), I wanted to provide some points of comparison between the two for anyone trying to decide whether to save some money on the older model. In general, the two are very similar -- they provide essentially the same functionality, although the new 7 includes a couple of new features (and includes for free some of the plugins that you had to pay for before with the 705).

Here's a quick rundown of the positive changes in the 7 vs the 705:

* Speed -- particularly of the web browser. The new 7 has a much faster CPU and renders web content at a much better pace (probably 3x the speed of the 705). Using the browser on the 705 was often painful except on pages that were geared to mobile devices. The 7 can handle even most complex pages without a problem. Since I use the device for browsing quite a bit, this is a HUGE plus for the 7.

* Email -- The 7 includes a native email client that supports GMail, Yahoo mail or any POP/IMAP server. It's very simple but usable. It's also free (i.e. not a plugin).

* Better screen -- The screen on the 7 definitely is crisper than that on the 705. And the colors are rendered more accurately (at least from my subjective point of view).

* Better responsiveness -- The touchscreen on the 7 is more responsive than on the 705. The increased sensitivity really helps the usability. That said, people who use other touchscreen devices (e.g. iPhone) may find that the screen is still not as sensitive/responsive as other devices.

* Size -- although the screen is the same size between the 2 units, the 7 is slightly shorter and thinner than the 705 (but not by much). The 7's glossy case does collect fingerprints rather quickly, but that's purely an aesthetic issue.

Advantages of the 705 over the 7:

* Archos dropped the mini-USB plug that was used to connect the Archos to your computer. It now uses a proprietary connector for this purpose.

* They also dropped the USB host port from that came with the 705. The 7 includes the USB host capability, but to use it you must purchase the DVR station or mini-dock add-ons. This was built-in directly in the 705 unit. This makes using the device to dump pictures from your digital camera more of a hassle as one more attachment must be carried just for this.

* They also dropped the video out connecter that was standard in the 705. Again, to use this feature with the 7 you'll need the DVR station or mini-dock.

* No stylus or case included -- I've found that using my finger generally works fine but a stylus is still better/more accurate on the screen. Luckily, the 705 came with 2 of them, so I use the spare with my 7. As for the case, you'll have to buy one from Archos to a third party if you want/need one.

Things I wish they would have improved:

* Weight -- this is one heavy device at nearly 1.5 lbs. Granted, the size makes carrying it in a pocket prohibitive, but the weight would do you in otherwise. Fine for a travel bag though and definitely much lighter than a laptop.

* Most plugins still not free -- The browser plugin and "web radio/tv" plugins are now free, but to view many online videos and items ripped from DVD, you'll need to plunk down extra $ for those plugins.

* Support for Flash 9 -- The Archos ostensibly ships with support for Flash 9, but what they don't tell you is that not all Flash 9.x versions are created equally. For example, while most clips on YouTube work, the version of Flash on the Archos does not support popular sites like Hulu. This for me is one of the largest disappointments of the Archos 7.

* No HD or 3G plugins available -- despite what the product description days, the plugins that provides HD video thru the DVR dock (or mini-dock) and which support a 3G wireless connection thru a USB dongle do not actually exist. There's also a very good chance they never will. Archos is notorious for promoting features which are never delivered. If either of these plugins is critical in your decision to purchase the Archos 7, you would be best off waiting until they are released before making the purchase.

For me, I use the 7/705 as a travel companion so I can watch videos, browse the web and store digital pictures. For web use, the 7 is a huge improvement. For videos, the better screen is a nice improvement, but for picture storage, the lack of the built-in USB host port and the need to carry the mini-dock is a bummer.

HP OfficeJet 5510 All-in-One Printer, Fax, Scanner, Copier Review

(More customer reviews)All things being equal, I would have to call the HP OfficeJet 5510 one of the best all-around printers / copiers / scanners around. I have reviewed enough all-in-one units now to appreciate a great model when I get to play with one, and after a month of testing, I can honestly say that the OfficeJet 5510 has really impressed me.
Printing is probably the main reason anyone would purchase this unit. The print quality is simply fantastic. Printing text-only pages is very, very fast, much quicker than I was expecting from an ink-jet printer. So quick, in fact, that my nine-year old daughter even commented on it just this morning. I used the OfficeJet 5510 to print out a letter to her school. She asked which printer it would come out, and I pointed to the HP. It was done printing just a few seconds later. Her reaction? "Wow, that was a lot faster than the silver and black printer." The silver and black printer being the Lexmark 5150 I reviewed back in June 2003.
Fast is not always good if the print quality is not up to par. The OfficeJet 5510 has nothing to fear. Using standard high-gloss photo paper and printing a photo from iPhoto, I was simply amazed at the print quality. I have printed many full-page color photos over the last few years, and I can honestly say that the OfficeJet 5510's print quality is one of the best for an ink-jet printer. While no speed demon printing a full-page color print, the print time was respectable.
Paper is loaded from the bottom front of the unit, so it is much easier to see how much paper you have left at a quick glance. Not so with a rear, upwards facing paper tray such as those found on most Lexmark, Epson, and other printers. I much prefer a lower-front loading tray to the other types. My only grip here is that there is no protective cover for the paper tray, meaning that if you don't print something every few days, dust will accumulate, and be run through your printer when you do.
Be aware that the OfficeJet 5510 is not a post-script printer; so graphic professionals will want to look elsewhere. There is also no built-in print sharing with the OfficeJet 5510, nor is it compatible with Rendezvous, but you can share it via USB Print Sharing built-in to OS X.
Speaking of OS X, if you are not using Mac OS X or Mac OS 9.1, and are still a happy OS 9.0 or earlier user, you are out of luck. Like many programs and hardware coming out as of late, the OfficeJet 5510 is not compatible with pre-OS X operating systems. Nor is it compatible with Windows 95, NT, 3.1, or DOS, either.)
Scanning is done via the HP Director software, which you can only get from the included CD-ROM. To deviate from the standard review process for a moment, I would like to point out that HP, while having great products for the most part, has a woefully inadequate support website. The above mentioned HP Director software cannot be downloaded via their website. When Mac OS X 10.3 was released, I had some initial problems printing to the OfficeJet 5510. The problem was unrelated to the HP software, but in my search for a cure I did learn of the poor quality of HP's support pages. What happens if I loose or scratch my HP CD-ROM? I have to order another one. And as of today's date, there is still no software update for the software on HP's website. The same software, HP Director, also controls their digital cameras with their HP Director (Camera). There is also no update for that program online, even though I cannot get it to work under 10.3 correctly. For a company the size and with the reputation they have, I expect better from HP.
Getting back to the OfficeJet 5510 and scanning, I have found that the scanning works great. While I don't especially like the scanning software the OfficeJet 5510 ships with, it does work well. You can access the software directly through Adobe Photoshop as well, via the Import-HP All-in-one Scan in the File menu. You can scan photos or documents from 150x150 DPI up to 19200x19200 DPI. The flatbed scanner performs about the same as most other scanners (and copiers) in this price-range, and there is nothing here. It work fine, has an auto-crop feature, etc...
The true strength of scanning, however, if the 20-page top-load automatic document feeder on top of the OfficeJet 5510. You can set the printer to scan multiple documents (not pictures) up to 20 pages, which is a great feature, one many small or home business users will appreciate.
Usually, when reviewing a multi-function printer / scanner / fax machine, the fax aspect is the least impressive. Using built-in fax software, you have to have your computer turned on to control, send, or receive a fax. Not so with the OfficeJet 5510! HP, realizing how nice it would be to be able to send and receive faxes, has taken the need to have a computer out of the equation. Simply plug the OfficeJet 5510 into your phone jack, and you can control all the fax features from the built-in LCD display. This is a great feature, one I overlooked when my testing first started. I now feel that this is one of the best selling points to the unit, and one I did not realized I missed so much from other units.

(More customer reviews)I bought this last week after reading a LOT of reviews on various netbooks. I wanted something lightweight, durable and reliable for traveling especially via plane. I have a fairly portable laptop already but every extra ounce seems to really seem heavy walking through airports, NYC, etc. I also like the idea of being able to carry a lightweight machine to public places where i can get a little work done without needing to carry a laptop, power cord, etc.
I was a little worried that a netbook would not be 'enough' but so far it has been outstanding!
This particular netbook is far nicer looking and seemingly more durable than ANYTHING i've seen at local stores. Although the screen is advertised as 'glossy' it is not overly so and looks nothing like the HP and Asus 'glossy' screens. The keyboard is fantastic and the built in track pad works really well. Battery life has been very good - I got close to 8 hours the first time I charged it. This netbook is comfortable to type on and has rounded edges. The speakers are decent and certainly better sounding than many other netbooks on the market.
I recently loaded Office 2007 - it runs just fine. I also UN-Loaded the pre-installed McAfee software, replaced with AVG and that was a good decision - things are much faster without McAfee. I plan to upgrade to 2 gb of RAM but right now everything runs just fine with the installed 1 gb.
Although a netbook will probably not ever replace my laptop, it is perfect for the times i want/need to have computer access for internet, email and word processing/office type work. The convenience of being able to take this very portable, lightweight machine with me is a real bonus!
Although this netbook is a bit more expensive than some others on the market, I think it's worth the extra money.

TRENDnet 300Mbps Wireless N Gigabit Router TEW-633GR (Piano Black) Review

Summary:When I connect my systems (Red Hat, Windows, Palm OS, OS/2 (Warp/Server)), PS2, etc to the Internet using this router, I'm unable to reach various Internet addresses.Doing a trace route finds the packets go so far and then get "Destination Network Unreachable."

NOTE:This also occurs from the router's administration page's ping page not just from various machines on the network.

The problem does NOT occur under two circumstances.

1) I connect a system directly to my Comcast cable modem.
2) I use my Linksys router (WRT54G or WRT600N).

Hook the Trendnet back up and the problem returns 100% of the time.

After calling Trendnet support, I began to become hopeful in finding a solution.Level one sent me almost immediately to level two, who called me back and worked through various possibilities.Follow-up phone calls from level two, though, required I contact them.

During the last session level two agreed something "interesting" was going on for two reasons.

1)They were unable to ping to these sites from their location using DSL.Their trace routes failed at the same point.
2) They connected into my router and verified mine failed by using the ping feature under Administration.

NOTE:I'm avoiding using the term web site, as I use various Internet protocols into these sites (e.g. sftp, ssh, smtp, dns, imcp, and yes http).

They gave me a choice to send them the unit or send it back to Amazon.com for a refund.I decided this unit is still my first choice as a replacement for the Linksys.Getting a RMA number, I send the unit back.This is where we are today.Trendnet has the unit (USPS tracking) but has yet to contact me.

The TEW-633GR works great otherwise and the gigabit wired interfaces do improve system to system speed for various protocols (e.g. ftp, sftp, large http requests, etc.).

Can I recommend it to you?If the Internet addresses you try to reach doesn't hit this routing issue the answer is yes!But I'm not sure what Internet addresses have problems with this router.You might go a lifetime without hitting this problem or one day you need to connect to your new employer's site and can't.Fortunately, Trendnet does seem interested in solving this issue.

I'll update this review as I get more information.The verdict is still out and hopefully this router will get a five by five rating and be with me for a very long time.

Final update:

According to the router's developers the problem is with the ATHEROS chip set they use.

I'm using Comcast and tried both a RCA and Motorola modem.We also tried DOCSIS 1.1 and 2.0 before I ended up returning the router.Trendnet said they are ** NOT ** going to fix the issue for a couple of reasons.

(1) They don't have cable access at their headquarters.They have T-1 and DSL.
(2) They don't believe cable users are a large percentage of their business.
(3) We agreed not all cable users will see this issue.Yet, those who do will be out of luck, period.

I'm now using a Linksys WRT600N with a Broadband chipset with no routing issues.I returned the Trendnet TEW-633GR to Amazon.com because of this design / software defect (per Trendnet assessment).

(More customer reviews)For a couple years we had one of those rental units from the CATV Company.When we found out that under the rental agreement, if it broke they had the right to charge us way too much cash for replacement, it was time to get our own unit.In rental fees alone, the RCA paid for itself in less than a year.The cable company itself has gone away from the expensive units of the past, and uses a black, lay-down only version of the RCA modem.
The RCA model here can be used as an upright (which is the way we use it), or attach the rubber feet, and use it as a lay-down model. It features either USB connection, or the standard Ethernet.I have an older computer running Windows 98SE, and the generic Ethernet card did not seem to work.The USB option works well, and is a nice option.It also features a rear reset, and a front on-off button.One feature that's hard to appreciate if you didn't know about it is the placement of the cable connector.On the old rental unit it was high in the middle, and even with the large modem size it would sometimes tip the modem if the cable were disturbed.RCA places their connection right near the bottom when used in the upright position.This not only alleviates the problem with our old rental unit, but also helps prevent tipping of the much lighter RCA unit.
We have used the RCA unit now for several months, and find it performs as well or better, than the old expensive rental unit.If we could ask for anything more (hence the four stars), we'd like units to show a simple display of the current connection speed, and activity. We realize this is available in software, but its nice to see it before attempting a download connection, or accessing Internet monitors. Currently the RCA unit flashes in response to changing speeds, but we'd like to see a simple numerical indication.As more CATV high-speed connections are installed, overall speed will decline.In the future, we'd like to try and hit the best times for fast downloads.Even over a CATV modem, a recent download of OS updates for my fathers Mac, took a few hours to complete. Now that video, media, and other files are getting ever bigger; its nice to know what speeds can be obtained.

Apple's 32 GB iPod Touch has finally given the mobile device market a media player with a great combination of quality, features and capacity.Of course it arrived shortly after I was given the 16 GB iPod Touch that I had put off buying for so long.Still, the extra capacity gives this unit the last piece of the puzzle it needed to be a must-have item for me. The awesome video, sleek thin body and web capability make it stand out despite a high price and some missing features.

Pros
+ Great design with a sleek thin body!!!
+ Beautiful 320x480 pixel wide-screen provides pleasing video viewing
+ Turn to the side to view video using the full wide screen width
+ Orientation detection changes view to landscape mode automatically when turning iPod!
+ Enough capacity to finally be worth replacing some of your disk-based players in earnest
+ Brighter screen with great contrast and crisp sharp images
+ Wireless access via 802.11 b/g compliant antenna (hopefully `n' will come soon)
+ Wireless searching and video on mode can be disabled to extend battery life
+ Great interface for Safari web browsing with easy Wifi hotspot setup
+ Headphone jack compatible with standard phones, unlike iPhone
+ New apps work great and give you stocks, maps, email, notes and weather
+ Supports both NTSC and PAL video out
+ Very nice size of 32GB stores good amount of video

- Touch design is almost too minimal without hold button or easy volume adjustment
- Very difficult to adjust or use without looking at it; some earbuds include controls that help
- Screen requires "real touch," bad for those of us in cold weather cities
- Data port seems more cramped than other models and difficult to seat on many dock ports
- The headphone jack is strangely placed right next to the data port; ok for landscape mode, awkward in portrait mode
- Not backwards compatible with legacy docks and cables; Universal dock now required for video out
- Battery life still shorter than other iPods due to WiFi and video power needs
- No expandability or SD card slot like Sansa View or Creative Zen
- iTunes software with limited native formats (MP3, MPEG4, AAC) and high overhead
- Some poor interface designs, such as volume control only available when upright
- PDA functions such as calendar syncing and contact management still need work
- Playlist and music groupings are lacking and need many improvements
- Still lacking some features such as built-in FM radio & voice recorder
- Missing Zune features such as the ability to share songs with other iPod Touch units
- No Bluetooth for peripherals and accessories
- No wireless synching or wireless access to iTunes WLAN libraries
- No WiFi viewing of live iTunes PodCasts
- Still no local viewing of PDF or other common document formats
- No mode to use as disk storage?!?!
- Roughly 2GB of space taken up with iPod software alone!!!!

Looks and Design

Aesthetics and design have always been Apple's greatest strengths, along with Steve Jobs' marketing savvy.The iPod Touch is solid but light.It has a longer body than either the latest iPod nano Apple 8 GB iPod nano AAC/MP3 Player Black (3rd Generation) or the iPod Classic Apple 80 GB iPod classic (Black).Yet it's slightly shorter than the iPhone.It's nice and thin, though not as thin as the new Nano.

The big 320x480 pixel wide-screen is simply gorgeous, and the instant landscape mode combined with high quality video resolution makes this the first truly beautiful mobile video player.The old Creative Vision W Creative Zen Vision W 60 GB Widescreen Multimedia Player (Black) had a lovely display, but was MUCH thicker.The Touch blows everything else away in terms of looks and design.

The metal back common to most iPods still attracts fingerprints, but you will be too busy staring at the screen to notice them.The screen too attracts smudges.I've heard it's almost impossible to scratch it, but I still bought screen and body protectors before I ever touched it.

Apple did away with the hold button and the click-wheel.While I really love the touch interface, it's impossible to change tracks or volume without looking at the player, an awkward trait.Get a nice pair of headphones with integrated controls and you won't notice the omission as much.

Sound and Video

Sound quality is slightly improved from previous models.The included headphones are the same as other models.I actually think the included phones are fine in terms of sound, but not so much in terms of comfort.Upgrade your phones only after doing a lot of research.For the Touch, having phones with volume control and additional buttons is a huge plus.

This guy really showcases video, but the sound is still very good and improving with the last few models.I expect this trend to continue.

Most video encoding is done at very high bitrates, which has the added benefit of better sound. Use the highest quality bit-rate you can stand if sound quality is your primary desire.As for me, I have been through frequent hardware upgrades to add more disk space and finally try to collect all my music and videos in one place.

Features

The features in the iPod Touch were in development for 3-4 years.I was one of those who read the rumor mills daily waiting for all those features to come out in one bang.Well they didn't.

The first Touch seemed to artificially remove some features already available in the iPhone, which was very disappointing.Now with the software update, at least a few of those things have been added back in.It really sucks that they charged 16GB early adopters for those features, but luckily they are included with the 32GB iPod Touch.

The main improvement is of course the increased capacity.That feature alone was long overdue and far outweighs most of the cons the player still has.Even though you can't load a lot of video at once, you can finally load enough to satisfy even demanding users.This is a huge plus over the 16GB model, which is available with or without updates.Apple iPod touch 16 GB without Software Updates

The device's battery life is still shorter than one would want, but longer than the iPhone and more than adequate for an average day's usage.Users will notice their battery indicator going down, but probably won't get cut off before they get home.

Apple's software is still a weakness with very limited direct control over your device library and few file options.No external disk function, no native WMA support?With key features disabled, such as use as an external hard drive, it makes you wonder.Hopefully some of these features will be added back into this device with time.

Coverflow works MUCH better than on the iPod nano and actually helps when scrolling through your videos.Press yourselection and the cover flips over to show you which tracks are available.

It's still buggy and there are some UI features that are lacking.Elapsed time and track length aren't shown for podcasts, and volume adjustment only shows up in portrait mode for some reason.Still, hopefully some of these more intricate details will be added in a FREE patch as opposed to a fee update.

The Safari web browser is THE killer feature of the Touch.Most of the other widgets, including the new ones, are stuff that you can get through the internet.The widgets added back to the Touch which are available on the iPhone just make some of those common functions quicker.Quick stock quotes, instant weather.Not bad.

The video out signal options are a nice addition and can be set to either NTSC or PAL.This is great for those who travel or have some foreign hardware, like me.;-)

Finger-based scrolling is very intuitive and you will be navigating with ease in no time.I'm less happy with the virtual keyboard and I can't wait for an alternative to appear.I have to use it very seldom, so I can live with it.

I use this unit to connect 5 computers to the Internet and even with all five systems online at once, the performance is impressive.

(More customer reviews)Everything about this radio appeared to be excellent.However, myself and many other owners have been bitten by what is obviously a design problem.Frequently when turning off the car engine, the radio defaults to External Amp and turns bluetooth off. Of course, the problem appears when turning the engine on again - No audio output from internal amp and bluetooth is off. This requires you to go back into setup to change these settings. If you're running an external amp, I guess this problem would only be half as bad. You would still have to deal with the Blue Tooth issue. This problem is well documented in audio forums. I contacted my vendor who informed me they are still waiting for a fix/solution from Alpine. They authorized a return.

Too bad really, as the combination of features and price were perfect for a non-audiophile wanting to upgrade his stock truck radio to something desirable for his teenagers without spending a fortune.

(More customer reviews)I bought the 1 TB IoSafe because I wanted a good detachable hard drive that would last. I think it is worth the cost for what you get. The fact that they advertise it to be able to withstand fires, floods and theft seemed like a bit much to me at first, but now it feels more like my personal safe rather than just another computer component: I have downloaded and scanned all of my music and photos; albums, cassettes & CD's along with my important legal documents, tax statements, bank records etc. I placed these items into various partitions that I created. I like it so much I am thinking about purchasing another IoSafe for my DVD collection! My only real complaint would be that it is kind of noisy when it is working. Also, the blue lights in front are pleasing but, the on/off switch is in the back and would be a pain in the neck to turn off and on if you placed it on the floor; which is exactly where something this heavy normally usually goes: However, I placed mine on a glass shelf that's a part of my computer table. I then put a small carpet/rug remnant underneath so it doesn't scratch the glass and it also helps with the noise. The only compromise I am making is that I cannot bolt the safe to the floor. There is a nice hole in the rear frame to insert a bolt through if you want to do this but then you have to think about reaching down and turning it off and on all the time. Leaving it on all the time doesn't seem to great of an idea as the blue lights are bright and when it is saving things it does make some noise. In any case I didn't need to bolt it down so my solution works really great for me. The IoSafe makes you feel really secure. I am sure there are ways to add additional passwords/encryption codes etc. to further secure your data and valuables within the safe, but nothing I have is really all that valuable to anyone else but me, the peace of mine I get and the obvious thought that was put into this build makes this product quality in my book. It truly is My Digital Safe.

I thought it would be helpful to add that I never ended up getting a second IoSafe. I'm still really happy with my IoSafe but I found 1 TB to be inadequate to hold all my DVD's: I have too many of them. I'm going with a 4 TB NAS with a RAID option. The IoSafe comes in a 2 TB model, but I need even more space. I read online recently that many people who have not yet purchased an external hard drive have cited the deciding factor as their lack of speed and that in the past, many externals have been, clunky, expensive, loud and slow: The Iosafe revels in all of these qualities; it's heavy, clunky, a real pain to carry around which is why even if you don't bolt it down it's really unlikely to ever get stolen. It's been slow for me when I transfer massive amounts of video, but no slower than would be expected from USB; eSATA would have been a better option. I find it a little noisy but not unreasonable: I positioned it convenient enough to turn off & on, but not near earshot. All things said, as I look back now, I stand by my start rating. I really like this clunky, sort of loud, kinda expensive and a little slow, bombproof 1 TB external solution to backing up your computer to place that is probably safer than anyone really needs!

- no support for cd changers but many feel that because of usb drives and ipods, changers are legacy...whatever!
What's a CD? Does anybody use them anymore? :)
- touch screen has a sweet spot that is small and off-center so it's easy to make the wrong selection and have to waste time on a redo...
Haven't noticed it yet. There is a calibration for the screen that needs/can be done so maybe that would fix your issue.
- no IR functionality which means wireless remotes cannot be used and this unit really needs one...
I never liked remotes in a car. I've had three head units that had remotes, including the one I just took out. Never put a battery in them. The head unit is arms length away, the remote is under the seat, stuck to a french fry, whatever. What is the remote for? I know some people like them, I just never have.
- xm works great BUT xm traffic is not supported, only msn direct...
Yeah, XM traffic would be better. MSN is a no go. Per their website they are shutting down the service. However, all the online reviews of this unit say getting the MSN is a no brainer, that it's data in invaluable. Go figure.
- no exterior mute button....
Hold down the voice prompt button and it mutes. I luckily noticed this in the manual when I was perusing it during the install.
- installing the hd radio module disables regular am/fm functionality...
Hmm, that's odd. I asked about it and wasn't told this was an issue. I didn't get HD radio so I cannot comment.
- route guidance has no introductory statement to start your route, you just start driving and eventually it begins giving directions...
Good. The less it talks the better. I have people in the car, the telephone going, stuff to remember to do. Just tell me where to turn already, skip the rest.
- route guidance audio does not identify by exit number, street or exit name, just take next and you must look at screen for what next is...
Hmm, good point. I didn't think about this before. I guess refer to the point above for me. Just keep me from blasting by the turn. I'll handle the rest. The road, distance, and direction of turn are on screen.
- last unit i had gave me my vehicle speed as well as the current posted speed limit, this unit gives neither...
Agreed! Sorta. I love having the GPS speed on screen for some strange reason. The GPS speed is available on a setup/calibration screen, but not on the main screen to my knowledge. I guess I can get my GPS calculated speed fix there. As for the speed limit on the GPS, I think I'll trust the handy dandy signs that were happily stuck in the ground for my personal amusement along the side of the road.
- adding a route is real work. to start a route you must type each and every complete word exactly, it does not help you complete words with suggested common choices nor is it flexible when searching...
Type in part of the word and hit enter, it'll show the most likely matches. The route seemed perfectly easy to enter to me, and thank God, the keyboard layout is a QWERTY so you know where the letter is without singing the alphabet song.
- when recalculating a route, it says nothing and starts the process very slowly.
Again, thank God. Say less, do more. I hate it when you are going off route manually and you don't want to key in your change. "Recalculating route....Recalculating route...etc, etc until you give in and either cancel the route or get through your detour."
- there is a search by address voice function, but it's slow and awkward, using it is a real struggle...
All voice commands are slow and awkward to me. I've been amazed at how accurate this thing has been so far.
- no voice commands for basics such as "go home", "cancel route", etc. so you must touch screen through several menu layers for them...
I haven't tried this yet. Go home should be a voice command. I agree. Good points. I did take the time to setup my custome home screen. It has icons for cancel route and go home so they are right there on the home screen. Nice.

POI TRULY SUCKS...
I already tried some POIs. They were not in there as often as I'd like so I agree. But, via the SD card you can load POIs so I'll give it a pass. If it's something I need I'll load it. If not, oh well. I can always look up the address. I did take the time to load some POIs just to see how this worked. I now have every Hooters in the US on my GPS. Sorta overkill as I really don't like chicken wings that much but considering how easy it was to add thousands of esoteric POI waypoints, I think it would be hard to knock what they have built in.

So far, this unit has been pretty much everything I wanted. I pulled out and replaced a Clarion 675 VXD with this Pioneer. It's so much better than the Clarion it's hard to imagine. Everything works as it's supposed to on the Pioneer. Not so on the Clarion. And Pioneer is using Parrott's bluetooth technology. I love Parrott.

I do have a couple of squawks that aren't mentioned previously. The unit, like everything in this country today, has a legal warning. Of course, somebody lost a lawsuit somewhere along the way and not only do we have to agree not to be stupid once, we now have to agree every time the unit boots. I've sort of resigned myself to this fact of life, however, there is a quirk with the Pioneer. Until you ok the legal screen, some of the functionality doesn't work. The iPod voice recognition it does at every boot up doesn't start until you have clicked ok and if you have just updated your iPod this VR load can take several minutes. If you are on the audio screen, as I often am, the warning screen doesn't appear. It's a navigation warning screen, so audio is playing from your last song but the unit is effectively nerfed until you click ok, no VR load, no audio commands, etc. The backup camera does work and it does immediately, which is good. It can be frustrating to jump in the car, fire up and want to start a phone conversation right away but the voice commands won't work till the VR load finishes, the VR load won't start till you click ok, and none of that will start till you click ok on the nav screen which probably isn't up and running. It would be nice if after 30 seconds you haven't clicked ok, it just times out and starts it's normal process or if the warning screen would pop up over navigation and audio so you can click ok. (Update to this note.) Turns out the issue above is actually a quirk of my installation. We may have accidentally performed a work around to eliminate the speed sensing ability of the Pioneer, which would enable the use of the navigation system, and video playback, while the vehicle is in motion. The issue I noted above is a side effect of this work around. Out of the box, this issue apparently does not exist, but you cannot use the navigation system above 10mph, which is in itself annoying in my opinion.

(More customer reviews)I'm always a little leery of buying in-ear headphones, even the expensive ones from the likes of Shure.I tend to like more bass than what most standard headphone buds provide and if you are like me, you will be very pleased with the Bose in-ear phones.First, they are extremely comfortable.Much like the Shures, Bose includes 3 sizes of silicone plugs that allow you to change the sizes for the best fit.There's a very small piece that slides into your ear canal, but for the most part, they sit in the bowl of your ear with just the small piece directing music down the canal.Bass again, is very good (not as good as their around the ear headphones which I also own) but they are definitely more than adequate for my needs - bass can definitely be heard.There's a little bit of sacrifice on the treble end, but treble is still colorful.These do not fit like the Shures fit -- where the Shures are almost naturally noise-cancelling due to how they fit down your ear canal, these do not block out outside noise.I work in a relatively quiet environment and so if you don't mind listening to your music/audio with low humming of outside voices in the background, these aren't bad.If you're going to spend this much on a pair of ear buds and want the noise-cancellation, I'd recommend the Shures.

I use these with my iPhone 3GS and when a call is received, you can press the toggle switch on the headset wire to switch over to pick up the call and talk using the built in microphone.There's no need to remove the headphones from the 3.5mm jack in order to pick up the call.Conducting a test with a friend, the microphone sounded fine to the other party.

(More customer reviews)I have had this product for several weeks now.I thought long and hard about which type to buy (I finally settled on Archos as the manufacturer) and went with the 604 WiFi due to the size (704 is too large for what I wanted) and cost (the 604 without WiFi was about the same price).

I also prefer the removeable battery, which the 605 does not have. The 605 does allow you to stream video whereby the 604 doesn't, so if this is an important feature for you keep that in mind.Also, oddly enough, the 604 WiFi comes with the Archos browser already loaded, and it appears you have to pay extra for this with the 605.

Learning how to convert files took me a while, but I found a good software to use (there are several freebies out there) and through a bit of trial and error, I have it down to a pretty good routine now.I've put about four movies on it and they work fine, although one I may have to reload because the movement on the screen is a little choppy for some reason.Converting DVDs to .avi takes a while, so I usually do this in the background while doing something else.Transfering the file to the Archos only takes a few minutes.

I see many complaints about the fact that you have to buy extra accessories, which is apparently true for most any Archos PMP. You should, of course, do your research ahead of time and figure those costs in the final price before you make the decision to buy it in the first place.If you want any cables, the docking station, etc. add those into the total cost when you compare, presuming that whatever you are comparing it to has these already included.I have ordered the docking station but it has not yet arrived, so I can't comment on its usefulness (or lack thereof).I also bought the two plug-ins online at the Archos web site.I knew in advance that I would incur these costs in addition to the cost of the 604 if I wanted them.Considering the price I got if for on Amazon, though, I still considered it to be a good buy.

Several comments have also been made regarding the sound quality of the speaker.Well, of course it's bad! It is a tiny little thing on a faily small device, so don't expect thundering surround sound.All I use it for is to make sure that the movies I have transferred to it did transfer successfully with the sound. In that respect, it's pretty handy to have.

I plan to use this to watch movies while traveling by plane, and I think it is perfect for that purpose.It is heavier than I thought it would be and IMO it is not a good choice if you mainly want MP3.There are many lighter options for this with probably better sound quality.In no way would you want to go jogging with this thing; it's simply not made for that.

All in all I have been pleased with my purchase and will probably buy a second one to give as a gift.I do recommend it.

EDIT 05/30/08:I have had this unit for about seven months now and continue to be pleased with it.I have it continually sitting in the docking station to charge and have learned how to set the timer. So, while in the docking cradle, it will turn on my Dish receiver, turn it to the correct channel, record the program and then turn the receiver off.You cannot transfer Dish recorded material to the unit, although you can do this with a free plug-in from Archos with the 605 or the 705 units.I am a bit irritated that Archos updated this feature for the 605/705 devices but not for the 604/704 devices, but such is life, I guess.

If I have any regret in buying it, it is that I didn't get the 80 GB or larger option instead of the 30 GB, but on the other hand this does make me delete those files I don't really need.It serves the exact purpose I wanted it for, though.When I travel, I now have a variety of programs to watch at my finger tips instead of being at the mercy of "AA Eye On American" every flight.It is one of the better buying decisions I've made.

(More customer reviews)PROS: Purchased the Speck Candy-Shell Purple Hard Protection Cover Case for iPhone 3G and have no complaints.It is a solid one piece cover, durable and also trendy - our team color is purple, and aside from asthetics, it does the job to protect your investment.I've dropped my iphone a few times, been man-handled by the kids and b/c of the construction I know that it'll be protected. The inner part is soft to cushion the iphone and the outer part is smooth and conforms to your hand, not slippery or maliable like the silicone skins you see out there.I do use a screen protector, however the pink ridge/soft shell adds to protect the face of the iphone when face-down.

CONS: This is my second Speck hard case replacement w/in a year of purchase b/c the shell cracked slightly on the lower ridge of the case (where the charger goes on the bottom).Perphaps b/c of this area being the weakest point of the entire case.Back of case can get scratched with time and handling and the pink edge can fade/darken after many times of use or carrying around in your back pocket.Volume buttons and power button on left and upper edge of case may need a stronger push to activate iphone, but overall, all structure of case is solid, durable and fashionable/trendy.

I would buy Speck again, wish they had other colors designs available at the AT&T store; looked online at Speck website and they have other designs to fit your every mood!:)

(More customer reviews)I primarily use earphones with my iPod, particularly when traveling by air, which I do a lot.The Klipsch Images replaced an older set of Shure E3c in-ear phones that I had been using for about three years.The Klipsch phones are very light, and I found that their earpieces fit me better and were more comfortable to wear than the Shures.They sealed out noise very well.Most importantly, however, the sound of the Klipsch phones is superb, and noticeably better than the Shure phones, any iPod earbuds and even my full-size Grado SR125s.Bass response is astonishingly good.These are expensive, but if you want something small, light and of very high quality, these phones are a great choice.

LG HS201 Slim LED Projector Review

(More customer reviews)As a retired professor volunteering in a senior citizen's program, I must tote what I need to teach cultural history. That includes equipment to show films and images and to play reasonable quality recorded music, as well as to lecture. The LG HS201 is ideal for my purposes. With 200 lumens it is the first LED projector that I have seen that is sufficiently bright and that has a usable built-in stereo sound system, although I do augment its meager 2 watts with external speakers. The USB port facilitates set-up and frees me from a tangle of cables, as I can easily put a couple of slightly compressed movies, an hour of MP3 classical music, and nearly 100 JPEG images onto an 8GB flash drive. The fan noise is barely audible--an estimated 29 DB--and at under 2 lbs. the projector is truly portable.

Most of its purported shortcomings are no more than compromises necessary to bring a lamp-free projector to market at a $500 price. For that figure, one should not expect a zoom lens, a tilt adjustment, or anything like a theater sound system. Incidentally, only the HS 200G and HS201G, neither of which is currently marketed in the USA, offer a standard carrying bag, and just the HS200 series, also not yet sold here, includes an FM audio transmitter. However, there is one LG HS201 defect that can and should be remedied at the earliest opportunity. The owner's manual is written in the unidiomatic English of a non-native speaker, and some of the manual's technical writing defies comprehension. A newly edited version would be helpful.

If you are interested in buying the LG HS201, I would suggest four accessories at first: (a) a USB flash drive of 8 or 16GB; (b) a lightweight tripod, rated at over 6 lbs; (c) a pair of small speakers; and (d) a carrying bag. With these, you should be good to go!

The buttons are covered, but still easy to get to. My only complaint is that the hole for the Wi-Fi antenna is too large and misaligned, exposing some of the silver back of the ipod. The green color looks awesome and there are no problems with the case picking up the sides of the screen protector. Great buy. (love the color!!! Green+black goes together so well!)

(More customer reviews)I was a bit nervous about buying this printer because there were no reviews yet on Amazon and my wife has had all kinds of software problems with an HP Photosmart printer that she bought last year (against the advice of dozens of Amazon reviewers).But after looking around a bit, I decided that the HP LJ3050 looked like the best all-in-one laser machine for the money.And I really loved my previous all-in-one, the HP LJ3100, which had served me well for 8 years.

I just received the product and installed it today, and the installation went smoothly (although it did take a while).The print quality is fine and the speed is an improvement over my old 3100.My only complaint about the print function so far is that the machine is kind of loud.The scan software doesn't seem quite as straightforward as the software for my 3100, but it does work just fine.I probably just need to get used to it.Copying is nice and quick.I haven't plugged the machine into a phone jack yet, so I won't comment on the fax features.

The machine is not quite as solidly built as my old 3100, but it is actually a little better than I expected.I would have to say that, overall, I am pleased with this product so far.My only complaint is that the box does not include the USB cable needed to connect the machine to your PC.I had to make a special trip out to the store to buy one, and it cost over $20.I went back and checked the outside of the box and could not find anything that clearly said "USB cable not included", so I feel like I have a right to be angry about it.

(More customer reviews)I've owned several cordless phones in the past but this is by far the best one. I'd say this is more of a cellphone/cordless hybrid as it has about as many features as my cell phone has.

The phone is pretty much totally customizable with 4 color schemes to choose from, several ring tones and several wallpapers. Most of which I don't like but thats not that big of a deal.

You get speaker phone on the handset as well as on the base, which is a great feature. You don't have to be right at the base to use the speaker phone and both of them are fairly loud and very clear.

You can listen to as well as screen messages right from the handset. That means if you are in one room and the base is in another you can still hear people leaving messages. A great feature for us call screener's!

The LCD is pretty bright and fairly clear. The handset volume can be adjusted and is loud enough for most people. The base has voice prompts for most features which was pretty nice.

Most 2.4ghz phones will disrupt your wireless network but I haven't noticed any issues with this one. I've got the base in the far end of the house but I can sit at my pc and make calls and there is no signal drop what so ever!

(More customer reviews)I own the Altec Lansing T612 Digital Speaker for iPod and iPhone (Black) and I was very surprised at how much better the iMT800 sounds. I will admit that for the price difference you should be able to expect better sound...and you can. The iMT 800 sounds very good - about on the same level as a nice rack stereo system. The high notes are crisp and there is strong continuity all the way down to bass. While the bass is not overly deep (effective to 50-60Hz would be my guess) it is more than adequate - the iMT800 does not sound punchy at all - instead the entire frequency response range is nice and smooth. I was very impressed.

Other Features

- Comes with 5 different adapters to ensure that any model of iPod will work. In my video review I show an iPhone (2nd G), and iPod Touch (2nd G) and an older Video iPod and they all fit nicely onto the iPod Dock.

- As you would expect the iPod dock will charge your iPod.

- One very nice feature is that when the iMT800 is used with an iPhone it will automatically silence the music when you receive a call - in fact, the ring tone is played at full volume over the Boom Box speakers! (Shown in the video)

- Decent remote - it would be a bit nicer with digital display - but it probably isn't worth the extra $$$.

- While it is not rechargeable you can use the iMT800 with D batteries - which makes it perfect for taking to the beach,park, or wherever.

- Plenty of volume to fill large areas

- It comes equipped with a FM radio and the ability to program in four presets (I will admit that 4 presets is a bit meager).

- 2 auxiliary inputs - this means that you can plug anything that has a headphone jack into the iMT 800 - this includes iPod shuffles (as seen in the video), CD players, tape decks, computers, Squeezeboxs... you name it- if it has a headphone jack it can be played on the iMT800. In fact, up to three devices can be hooked in at once (And then you can toggle through the inputs)

- Not too heavy - about 13 pounds so it can moved without too much effort

Areas for improvement

- Not the most attractive looking speaker unit. Not a problem for me - but this may not look at home on a walnut bookcase (or any nicer looking decor). This unit is designed for indoor/outdoor functionality - style was left at the door (or at least partially).

-It would be nice if it was rechargeable - it would add cost, but it may be worth it... however, there is nothing that would prevent you from buying rechargeable batteries!

- The display - could be made larger... and a full color display would have been a nice upgrade.

Final verdict -

I know I listed several areas for improvement, but in truth they are very minor points. The biggest factor is that this is a great sounding speaker dock - and it sounds significantly better than the less expensive Altec Lansing T612 Digital Speaker for iPod and iPhone (Black) so if great sound is your requirement you can buy with confidence!

THE GOOD:
*NO WIFI INTERFERENCE. This phone works well without interfering with today's (or tomorrow's) WiFi Networks
*SOUND QUALITY IS VERY GOOD, both receiving and transmitting. Uniden's microphones have been consistently horrible in the past, and I am delighted to see that they have fixed this.
*FORM FACTOR IS NICE. Not overly sleek and trendy, but not clunky at all.The most commonly used features are quick to access with only one or two button presses, with a few exceptions (see THE UGLY, below).
*GOOD RANGE. The lower frequency band of 1.9 GHz allows for a slightly greater range than the overhyped 5.8 GHz band.Works a little better through plaster walls.
*NAME YOUR HANDSET. Each handset is nameable. This greatly simplifies paging and conference calling.(Despite previous statements, multi-handset calls ARE possible, but they must be initiated by the handset making the call - you can't just pick up the extension.)

THE BAD:
*NO HEADSET JACK OR BLUETOOTH.Cordless phones should have some kind of handsfree option besides a speakerphone setting, but this one doesn't.I have a dedicated cordless headset, so this was not an essential feature for me.The handset's speakerphone works okay.
*CALLER ID DOESN'T DISPLAY THE PHONEBOOK NAME.This is pretty basic these days, but Uniden still hasn't caught up.When people listed in my Phonebook call me from a cell phone, I want their NAME to display, not just WIRELESS CALLER.This is not a deal breaker, but certainly an annoying oversight.

THE UGLY:
*THE ALERT THAT WOULDN'T DIE. Despite being able to turn all the sound alerts off, the phone still makes a loud and irritating BLURRRP! when you drop it into the charging cradle.Better not drop it in the bedroom cradle to charge while your spouse is sleeping.
*HOW DO I ...?To keep the phone sleek, some functions are a little more hidden than they should be.You will have to consult the manual to learn how to insert a pause into a Phonebook number, muting requires three button presses (You CAN mute the handsets, despite comments made elsewhere), and some phone settings are only available in certain modes, not universally available through the Menu button.Examples: Sound Enhancer is only accessible WHILE you are making a call, and Phonebook settings can only be made WHILE you are in the phonebook.There is a reason why a previous reviewer thought you couldn't have multi-handset conversations or couldn't mute the phone; you really have to read the manual.There are only a few of these hidden technical features though, and dang, the phone does look good.

I bought the version of this phone that includes an extra handset and charger.

(More customer reviews)I had been using an older Garmin GPS in my car for some time.It wasn't a street pilot, it was a Garmin III.I bought the TomTom Go 300 and can't believe how good it is.

The TTG 300 includes everything you need: Detailed maps of the USA on the 1 GB SD card with those maps and additional maps on CDs. It has mounting hardware, power cords, etc. but you probably know all that.

I am impressed with how well it picks up the satellite signals.My Garmin would never pick up a signal inside the house, and it would often not find one on a cloudy day.The TTG works fine in both cases.

The voice is clear and loud (adjustable) and you can have it give you a new instruction at any time.It will navigate to an address, a nearby "point of interest" (bank, airport, park, hotel...). And it will find alternate routes if you hit a roadblock or just don't like the suggested route.You can tell it to build routes that are fastest, shortest, for biking or walking.You can avoid tolls or not.I really like the choices.
I think the screen is easy to see and the screen updates are plenty fast.

So far the map data has been fairly accurate.Around my home town I notice that some roads that are 3 years old are missing, but I would expect that.The TTG will show you on the road even if the map data is a little off.In other words, it will snap your position to the map road even if you drive off it a little.But if you go far enough off a road, it will show you exactly where you are (in the middle of field or whatever).

The menus are very easy to use.Much easier than I expected. You use the touchscreen to pick a city, street, address, and you're off.It does have the 3-D view of the map which is similar to the view out your window, but I still prefer the typical 2-D map view.You can see more streets that way.

The point of interest database has lots of places.I don't know the exact number of categories but I would estimate there are at least 25 categories (banks, airports, rental cars, amusement parks, gas, theaters, courthouses, police, hospitals, doctors, dentists, border crossings, zoos, etc.)And you can create your own categories and add places.I did not find a list of ATM's, however, and this would have been useful.

You can also view the satellite signal strength, battery life, and actual Lat/Long. I wish you could enter a Lat/Long as a destination, but alas, you cannot.

As other people have said, it is very difficult to see in bright sun.At times, I have to reposition it to reduce glare, but this inconvenience would not stop me from buying it again.

I have not used the bluetooth feature and can't really see myself paying for the subscription feature.

Overall, it is a Very Powerful navigator.It comes on when I start the car and goes off when the car stops (because the cigarette lighter goes off).It is very easy to use and very easy to follow.I actually want to take more trips now just to let the TTG figure out the best way to get there.And now my friends all want one. I see Garmin now has a similar model, which I haven't tried.But I would still buy the TTG again if I was shopping for one.

Update 4 months later...
I still like the unit and its functions, but as others have said, the map data and routing is disappointing at times.It always got me where I wanted, but half the time it seemed to take me the longer way.It seems to be reluctant to put me on a freeway for short trips, even when it is faster.And I haven't really compared this to another brand, except for the system in the the Audi A4, which does seem to do a better job: Even knowing what side of the street your destination is on.But that is not an after-market system.So if I was shopping for an after-market system today, I would most likely still buy the Tom Tom for the features, but I would take a close look at the routes is suggests while driving.

The technology works!Using a Sprint Air card I was able to keep tuned into my TV while driving in the country.This is probably the worst case scenario for remote reception.I was only getting about 100K download speed with occasional dropouts.No other streamer that I have tested would work under these conditions.

I was running 320-240 res under these conditions.With faster more stable connection you can run higher.

At home on my home network I run 640x480 resolution with a maximum stream rate of 6000Kbps with Near CD quality Audio.

This box did not come with a software CD or SVid cable.So I had to dig one up.I had the player software from SlingBox AV that I had tested.In any case you will need to download the latest software from the SlingMedia website.I had to dig up an aditional Svid cable.The Ugly

Couple things that I realy hate about the SlingBox technology.

-Max Res 640x480 res

-Only one connection allowed at a time.If you try to connect and someone else is watching the slingbox you will get a Buisy indication.Thats why it is called a Personal TV Viewer.

-No Recording Option available.There are some third party venders offering this at a cost of $49.

-Mobile Player software is not free.You must pay $29 for wach mobile device you want to install the player software on.Final Thoughts

All this said, I still love the SlingBox. I had originaly purchased the Slingbox AV but found its connection options limited with out a pass through connection.I now have two devices set up.Dish Sat box and Panasonic E55 DVD recorder/player.I can remotely change the channel and start my recorder from anywhere in the world that I have an internet connection.

BTW this box retails for $179 and I picked mine up for $159.Thats only $30 more than I paid for the AV.

(More customer reviews)I've used Uniden cordless phones for years and years and have always been satisfied for the most part.I've used cordless phones at other people's homes which were made by other companies and they really didn't measure up, especially on the cheaper models.

I bought the EXAI5580 to replace both an older Uniden cordless and a fairly new answering machine that was completely inadequate because I couldn't skip through messages and couldn't change the maximum record time.

The 5580 does everything I need and more.The clarity is superb and better than my older Uniden phone.It's even removed excessive static on some calls - it sounds better than the corded phone!The answering machine records up to 4 minutes on a single call.(Anyone with a mother needs this feature.)You can even record up to ten minutes of a phone conversation, a feature I didn't even know the phone had until I read the instructions.

Just note that the phone itself is not digital (which would apparently make it more secure), but the answering machine is.For a completely digital phone you'll have to pay more.Still, for the price, this is probably the best cordless phone with an answering machine you can buy.This is easily one of the best cordless phones I've used in years - great features and a clarity I haven't experienced in years.

8x8 Packet8 Broadband VoIP Service with DTA-310 Phone Adapter Review

(More customer reviews)I've had Packet8 service for a year and a half now.I know many folks want to know how does this thing last over the long run.Well for me, its nearly perfect.

First thing you need to know is that this phone is dependant on electricity reaching this device as well as an internet connection.That means if you have a power outage, you have no phoneline.Something to consider.Also if your internet connection goes out frequently, so will your phone.If you have a power outage, you need to power cycle this device along with your modem and router in order to get back on the phone.I've learned this the hard way over time.

Also, if you're looking to totally dump MaBell and $30+ monthly fees for voicemail, 3 way calling, caller ID, call waiting, etc (in my area, those basic features ran me 50+ a month) I highly recommend a CABLE internet connection.Reason being is that most times if you disconnect your phone line completely from MaBell, you'll lose your DSL.Least in this area thats the way it goes.To go totally without MaBell, use a cable internet connection. And now they're offering a 2nd number or "virtual number" for 4.95 a month with no setup fee until January.Good deal for college parents or people with family in another state.Just get a packet8 virtual number in their hometown and have them enjoy calling you as a local number.Easy!

Another thing, this service does NOT support 411 or 311 calling AT ALL yet.They promise to have the feature in the future, but how long is unknown.This means to most people keeping a list of local non emergency direct switchboard numbers and using the internet as a phone book.Tedious, yes.But I havent found 311 and 411 access to be worth over 40 dollars a month to me just for the right to use them.

Unlike other broadband phones, Packet8 offers true 911 access.Your home is connected by address to the dispatch.Most other companies only offer a pseudo 911 that you have to tell the police or hospital or fire department your exact address.If its an emergency, do you really want to be hanging around your house to give and verify all of this information?

Another thing is system stability.MOST times their network is stable.I get one outage for about 4 hours a month.NOT the end of the world for most, but it can be annoying.Sound quality is good unless you're downloading 15 movies online and chewing up your bandwidth then you'll experience echoing and periods where you cannot hear the other person.Stop the download and you'll be fine.Just dont tear up the pipe and you'll be fine.For most this is not an issue.

Updates are rather simple, you go to their website, you download an application and it patches the device, simple!A manual install is also available that includes a diagnosis mode.

I've been nothing short of thrilled with their service and the price is definitely right!

It has the most clear sound, it doesn't pick up every little noise in the background, it has a good fit, my voice is clear to the caller & it's light-weight!The only thing I don't like is the cheap ear loop. It's hard to believe that Jawbone would make such a great bluetooth, with such a cheap ear-loop. Other than this, it's GREAT !!

Features - I wanted multi-point mapping abilities & ability upload routes from my PC, cause I volunteer for the MS150 and Tour de Cure bicycle events that have multiple break points (rest stops) and a route that zig-zags all over creation.

Features - I liked the idea of a larger screen (5 inch), the lifetime traffic service, the built in bluetooth speakerphone, and Garmin's reputation.

Map Upgrades - I found that I could buy a lifetime subscription to map updates for a little over $100, using the 10% discount code Garmin gave me for registering my unit with them. (Note: register with Garmin first, then buy the map upgrade from their site, save 10%.)

Other Items Bought - I also bought the Garmin friction dash mount to use instead of the (included) suction cup window mount.Garmin Portable Friction Mount [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging]

Who Needs the Stinking Manuals - Being a guy, I didn't bother with reading any manuals until much later.Got it straight out of the box, turned it on and used it for a trip right then and there, comparing it side by side with my old GPS.I plugged in a destination about 160+ miles away involving interstate highways in Texas, plus some side roads, multiple towns, etc. I went straight from the PO Box, to the carwash before leaving town and hitting the highway north to Ft. Hood from San Antonio, TX.

The Garmin 1490T got me there faster (than the way my old GPS tried to route me) by about 20 minutes, cause it took me down a state highway with 60-70mph speeds, instead of sticking only to US highways.

Audio Directions - Audio quality quite nice in my opinion. Computer female voice, default 80% volume setting, easy to hear over road noise even in a rainstorm while driving.

Bluetooth Speaker Phone- I figured out how to connect my cell phone to the Garmin 1490T fairly easy, with pin code 1234.I've been making and sending calls thru it, mostly as a speaker phone, but found that the 1490T actually pulled down my phone directory and I could dial from there instead.But it didn't get 100% of the directory. For some reason, it didn't get all 500 phone #'s, like it skipped my wife's cell number. (not good).Audio has been reported as good from the callers on the other end, saying some road noise detected, one saying I sounded like I was on a speaker phone, but quite legible even while highways noise was in background.Don't try using the speaker phone while driving in a rainstorm, too much background road noise from the rain hitting the windshield, etc.

Traffic Alerts - I wasn't sure how that worked, but trusted it would, since San Antonio, TX, (where I live) was on the list of covered cities.But as I drove north on IH-35 toward Austin, TX, all of a sudden a voice came out of nowhere saying "Severe Traffic Congestion Ahead, Recalculating Route".This was about 35 miles before the congestion!It took me up into the congested area, then routed me around the majority of it.Wish I had trusted it earlier and I would have popped over to the nearby tollroad miles earlier instead.To me it was magic, I'm not sure how this works (FM transmitter / received built into power cord) in terms of where they get their live traffic info from, but it worked.

Lane Changing Alerts - The visual guide to changing lanes was more of a "hey, there are two right turn lanes ahead, left two lanes go straight", etc. Audio was very accurate in saying "stay left for exit to..." or "stay right to exit then turn left/right, etc."Very timely alerts and I never missed a turn while using it on this trip.

Screen Display - Easy to read! It alerts me to local speed limits when driving on highways, was only off by 5mph one short stretch of Texas Hwy 195 (speed was actually 60 instead of 65). Noticed some glare when the sun hit the screen from behind or from the side, will apply anti-glare screen like I used on my digital camera to see if that helps in future.

Cons: When text messaging received, it says "unknown caller" and stays on the screen, despite touching "ignore" or "answer".Have noticed a few times that pop-up screen (while using bluetooth function) is annoying only because it didn't go away right away, but the GPS kept giving me audio directions even though I couldn't see the map. I'm going to keep playing with that "issue" and contact Garmin tech support about it if I can't resolve it myself.

Recommendation - Yes, I strongly recommend this model to anyone wanting a easy to read, easy to use, accurate GPS for their vehicle.Supposedly it has pedestrian direction functions built in, with additional maps available for purchase (really cheap per metro area), but I will only be using it in my mini-van.

(More customer reviews)i read a bunch of reviews on different models before i ultimately chose the 1390t. when it came down to the wire it was a hard choice between the 765t and the 1390t. The main difference I would like to point out is the charger. the 765t uses a mount charger, while the 1390t uses a micro usb fed directly into the unit. some users like the fact they dont have to unhook the charger when dismounting the unit(765t). like i said personal preference. oh and also no mp3 playback, fm tuner or multipoint point destination. 765t has all those.

real world test of features
user interface: so easy a caveman can do it. garmin definitely has the other brands beat when it comes to UI. i liked the feature set for price in the tomtom 940t, but the UI just looks so primitive. They need a major rehaul of that. the 1390t always gave precise directions without causing confusion. there was no lagging either. being able to update the ETA to total distance is a huge plus. almost always gave me the local speed limit. your speed turns red if you're speeding.

bluetooth: i was actually rather impressed with the bluetooth. it was easy to sync with my blackberry 8800(dinosaur phone i know). i had to speak a little louder than normal conversation. this is mostly because you're talking to the unit from 1.5 feet away. if the mic was more sensitive it would pick up more background noise. call quality was good on the other end. my friend couldn't hear the road in the background.

lane assist: i like the fact that it shows you all available lanes that you can take. it almost always did lane assist where available. junction view with photo realistic pictures never showed. i drove on the grand central, LIE, northern state, southern state, belt parkway, cross island. these are all major highways in the long island queens area. maybe it only does interstate highways. who knows. i was really disappointed when i didnt see the 3d simulation at all.

traffic alert: the ads are unobtrusive and don't show up while you're driving. traffic reporting was pretty accurate when it did have reception. i never tried any alternate traffic routes. the traffic map shows where the traffic begins and ends and your location.

new thinnest model of all time: don't make this the deciding factor for you. although the unit is 25% thinner than most other garmins, it's really not a big deal. the other garmins (200 and 700 series) were thin to begin with.

POI: for some reason when i looked for a mcdonalds or bk it would show everything but the closest location. i only used POIs 3-4 times.

random: i don't know why other people were complaining about speaker volume. i put it on a 100% thinking that it was going have weak speakers. i assure you, def not the case. it was practically yelling at me at 100%.

cons: no fm tuner, no multipoint destinations. you can have a via point though.price is a bit high. i paid 280including tax for the unit. i think $200 wouldve been a more reasonable price.

conclusion: if you wants all the bells and whistles go for this model or the 765t. if you just need a simple gps get a 200 series. theyre a lot cheaper. all in all great gps. 4.0/5.0. if you want a full list of features with pics check out [...]. theyre affiliated with amazon, so take that for what you will.***edit** 2 months later: 3/5 instead of 4/5 for ratings.
1)I use this device on the road every day now. I've driven all over queens, manhattan, and Long Island. One thing I found incredibly annoying is how it kept taking me off a highway only to remerge with it 2 exits later. It certainly was not the faster route to be following the gps' advice in these instances.

2)Another major gripe I had was the constant recalculation. I would follow its directions and it would say recalculating. When making critical turns that are close by, this can get really annoying. I don't know if this is a problem with my model or gpses in general or just garmin, but something needs to be fixed.

3) The suction keeps falling off the window. It may be because of the cold temperature. It recently dropped to the 40deg F. My friend uses a magellan (old non-widescreen 2-d version) on the same vehicle and her mount stays.

4)One thing I have to admit I absolutely love is lane assist. You really appreciate it when switching to different highways. It definitely is all it's cracked out to be. However, The 3-D sign simulation(lane guidance) is just a marketing gimmick(at least I think so). Not worth paying the extra $$$. Lane assist is more practical and worthwhile.

I know this edit may have confused customers on future purchases, but READ OTHER REVIEWSto see if the problems I've had are common in all devices or just this one.

(More customer reviews)I am a loyal Apple products user and I always buy AppleCare for my mac computers.Why?Because sometimes things go seriously wrong.The iMac and laptop AppleCare plans last three years, and I have had several computers which needed something done in that time which made the warranty worthwhile -- whether I needed phone support for a failure of some kind, or had a kernel panic which necessitated a new hard drive.

The iPhone's AppleCare warranty only lasts two years.It does not seem as worthwhile to me as the computer version, for that reason.However, when something went wrong with my iPhone during the initial 12 months of purchase (the "normal" warranty period), I decided not to take any chances.I never regret buying AppleCare because I know things can go wrong and when they do, they can cost a bundle.

(More customer reviews)I've been wanting to get a 5.8ghz phone system for a while, but all previous models seemed to always have some kind of major shortcoming.Seems Uniden recognized this and came out with a model to beat all previous ones.
The 8885 and 8865 models are newer versions of their old 5860/85 lines.It has pretty much any feature you could want.
Just to highlight some of the strong points:
1. Nice phone design.Perfect size and not as ugly as the previous model.
2. Perfect reception.Anywhere in our house the phone is crystal clear.
3. Speakerphone in the base and from every handset.
4. Intercom/Paging between phones
5. 100 number phonebook (although it shares entries with callerid).You can keep separate phonebooks per phone, or download the phonebook from other phones.
6. DirectLink mode, where you can use the handsets as walkie-talkies.Although in my opinion the phones are a tad too big to carry around with you everywhere, but it might be nice for specific situations.I haven't tested the range though.
7. You can have the base + 2 handsets speaking on the line at the same time.The previous model was limited to 1 handset per conversation.
8. Customizable ringtones - can assign a certain ringtone to a certain caller so you know who they are.Can only use the builtin tones though.
9. Handsets have a plug to use with a headset for handsfree operation
10. Can access the voicemail from any of the handsets, not just from the base.
Those are just some of the major features, there's plenty of other little bells and whistles to configure the phone.
My only 2 complaint is that incoming caller ID gets stored on every phone.There is no way to just delete it from all phones at once.You need to go to each phone individually to delete the callerid list.Fortunately there is a delete all option.
One other potential complaint is that you can't set up separate mailboxes on the answering machine.I know some of the other brands let you do this.No biggee for me as I wouldn't use the feature anyways, but might be important to some.
Those might just be nitpicks though.This system really exceeded my expectations and I give it the highest recommendation possible.

The TRU8885-2 from Uniden is a cordless phone with a built-in answering machine, caller ID compatibility, and expandability to 10 handsets (model TCX800). Ten speed-dial presets allow you to easily call the most frequently used outgoing numbers, and an alphabetical search feature provides an easy way to locate numbers stored in the internal memory.

Handset and base speakerphones provide a hands-free communication method, while a direct link mode allows you to use the handsets as walkie-talkies. Four-way conferencing allows several phones to communicate with an outside call. An intercom function enables communication with other phones on the same system, and the call transfer feature lets you transfer calls from the base phone to the handset and vice versa.
The all-digital answering machine has a 12-minute maximum record time and a four-minute maximum message length. A conversation record feature provides a quick and easy way to save important information such as directions, while full remote operation allows you to check your messages even when you are away from home. A page/handset locater feature makes finding a lost handset quick and painless. Handset and ringer controls let you adjust volume levels to your liking, while the redial button automatically calls the last three outgoing numbers. The TRU8885-2 also comes with a one-year limited warranty.
